LED industrial luminaires for extreme conditions in industry

LED luminaires for extreme conditions at the Vreden paper mill – robust, heat-resistant, and durable

The new LED lighting in the paper mill Papierfabrik Vreden has to fulfil high requirements while working reliably at a temperature of +60 °C. It also has to be able to withstand high humidity, water jets and vapours as well as cleaning processes with high-pressure cleaners – precisely the environment where NORKA luminaires feel right at home.

NORKA, the specialist for lighting in extreme ambient conditions, has a wide product portfolio that covers the requirements of a production facility like Papierfabrik Vreden. Indeed, extremely high temperatures, high humidity and vapours prevail in some places. For example, this is the case right below the ceiling of the roughly nine-metre-tall machine hall where the two paper machines operate. On average, the thermometer there measures +60 °C – and even a little higher on hot summer days. In other places, such as underneath the paper machine, it’s extremely wet as a result of the production process, and inside the system the lights are exposed to a direct jet of water and cleaning agents. “The systems are cleaned every fortnight and the lights are also blasted with a high-pressure cleaner,” explains master electrician Dominik Nacke, who manages the project with his company Elektrotechnik Nacke GmbH.

Homogeneous illumination

For general lighting purposes, this is where the twin lamp version of the luminaire ERFURT LED EXTREME is used for areas with special safety requirements that can easily withstand ambient temperatures up to +65 °C.  A total of 60 of these IP65 luminaires are installed in four strips of 15 luminaires each on mounting rails in the roughly 12-metre-high warehouse. With their medium beam light distribution, they ensure uniform illumination and provide good visibility for employees with 550 lux illuminance.

The luminaires have DALI drivers which means they are ready for future integration into a sensor-based daylight control system, as the ceiling of the warehouse has a strip window that allows plenty of daylight into the room, especially in summer

The future in mind

The heat-resistant ERFURT LED EXTREME luminaires are also used in the machine hall. In this case, the two-lamp luminaires are mounted on the ceiling above the production lines and also generate an illuminance of around 550 lux. Two four-lamp luminaires are used in two work areas between the two paper machines, where more light is required. When it comes to the luminaires, the future and the ability to modernise electronic components have already been taken into account. They feature an “easy eXchange LED”, which means that the LEDs in the protective tube can be replaced using a plug connection while the protective tube can still be used.

Particularly robust thanks to the moulding process

NORKA luminaires are even installed inside the paper machines, in fact, anywhere where additional light is needed for cleaning. Employees used to have to resort to hand lamps, but these days LUGANO tubular luminaires in a special 2.50-metre length supply the light needed. The IP69K luminaire is not only impervious to dirt, dust, gases, moisture and water jets, it is also tolerant of various aggressive atmospheres; it can even be used where cleaning with hydrogen peroxide is required.

In the accessible basement below the paper machines, there is an area that is also very wet and thus lit with LUGANO. On the other hand, in another area it gets extremely hot which is why ZUG LED EXTREME tubular luminaires have been installed there. They easily withstand ambient temperatures up to +65 °C and because of their high protection rating of IP69K they are also suitable for intense cleaning processes with high-pressure cleaners like LUGANO.
