In the middle of the Upper Black Forest on an altitude of 1,000 metres, the Baden State Brewery Rothaus can be found. There, the art of beer brewing has been preserved since 1791. Traditional craftsmanship, regional ingredients and water from seven own springs are the basis for the quality beers produced with the Rothaus brewing process.
A team of master brewer and beer brewers attends to the creation, maturing and storage of the beer around the clock. Powerful luminaires in combination with a smart lighting control system by NORKA ensure a clear view, safety and an optimum energy balance.

In the production plant, NORKA luminaires of the type ERFURT LED provide room-filling, efficient light.
NORKA’s lighting solutions have provided visual comfort and safety for many years in production plants of the food and beverage industry. “We combine traditional brewing art with innovative production methods. This includes a state-of-the-art lighting solution”, Ralf Krieger, 1st master brewer and authorised representative of State Brewery Rothaus explains and points out why the choice fell on NORKA for renewal of the lighting system in the production areas without daylight and in two staircases.
The manufacture of natural products involves sustainability as part of the company philosophy at Rothaus. In 2015 an energy management system in compliance with ISO 50001 was introduced among other things. LED technology offers high lighting quality combined with energy efficiency and a long service life. Thanks to lighting control, energy efficiency can be further increased. For this purpose, a system solution by NORKA is used that combines a lighting system and sensor technology in one unit.

The luminaire ERFURT LED provides homogeneous light that is pleasant to the eyes.
The quality standards of the brand “Rothaus” apply also to smooth production processes without malfunctions. Due to the shift operation of the company, the fermenting and storage cellars of the brewery illuminated for 24 hours on weekdays. The newly installed NORKA surface mounted ceiling luminaires ERFURT LED provide continuous, homogeneous light that is pleasant to the eyes. Not only the Rothaus employees benefit from this, but also the visitors who take part in brewery tours to see the production processes.
Another quality aspect of NORKA luminaires is their glare-free lighting effect that is achieved by means of reflector tubes. “When we witnessed the light distribution of the ERFURT LED for the first time during test operation, we were immediately convinced,” Konrad Kaltenbacher, master electrician at Rothaus AG, briefly and concisely explains the decision for NORKA.
Lighting solutions for challenging environments are part of NORKA’s long-time core competencies. Extremely high moisture is one of the special challenges in the cellar rooms and tunnel vaults on the second underground level of Rothaus brewery. The cleaning process of the production plant using water jets presents an additional challenge. The housing of the ERFURT LED luminaire made of high-quality polymer is corrosion-resistant and protects the luminaire from ingress of water jets according to protection rating IP65.
The operation of the luminaires in two staircases connected to the production area of Rothaus brewery was to be limited to the periods when people were present in the area of the stairs. The company selected the NORKA product MÜNCHEN LED for these areas, a surface mounted ceiling luminaire with particularly flat housing. In connection with NORKA’s XARA® motion sensors, an uncomplicated solution could be realised that only provides light at times when it is needed. The employees of the State Brewery can now walk around in the staircase without having to bother to switch the light on and off. This is realised with the use of sensors integrated into the luminaires that detect motion in the room. This way, the lighting and lighting control system can be provided from under one roof and work without external interfaces. This does not only provide comfort, but also saves energy and protects the environment.

Lighting solutions for challenging environments, such as those used at Rothaus, are part of NORKA’s long-time core competencies.
A practical and economical benefit for the decision for NORKA was also the fact that all luminaires could be easily mounted on site. They were also connected to the central battery. This is particularly important for the luminaires installed in the connection tunnels of the cellar rooms as well as the staircases, as these building areas are used as escape routes. In addition to the achieved energy efficiency, there are additional cost advantages thanks to the reduced need for maintenance of the LED luminaires and the elimination of lamp changes. This leads to a solution with exceptional radiant power.
