CHANGES OF ROHS DIRECTIVE: BAN on fluorescent lamps

What is background of the ban of fluorescent lamps?

In spring 2022 the RoHS Directive was revised by the European Commission. The RoHS Directive (Restriction of the use of Hazards Substances) regulates the restriction of the use of hazardous substances. Since mercury is considered a hazardous substance, its use in electronic devices is generally prohibited. For T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, there used to be an exemption. This exemption has now been abolished by a sales ban for the fluorescent lamps concerned.

 

Which lamps are banned and as of when?

What applies to fluorescent lamps already placed on the market or already installed?

The ban only applies to the placing on the market of fluorescent lamps, therefore lamps that have already been installed do not have to be removed and replaced immediately. As soon as they no longer function, they must be disposed of as hazardous waste and replaced by new lamps that comply with the directives. Lamps that have already been placed on the market by the deadline and are therefore still available in shops or in stock at customers' premises may continue to be sold and used.

Is it worth replacing even before the ban comes into force?

In terms of both prices and high electricity costs, it is worth switching to energy-efficient LED lighting at an early stage. When you switch, you not only benefit from lower costs, but also do something good for the climate and the environment.

What will change with regard to NORKA products?

And a number of our LED products have several lumen packages to choose from - we call this concept "focussed lighting".
