Municipal and municipal operations such as wast water or sewage treatment plants as well as independent drinking water supply and wastewater treatment plants are exposed to extreme environmental conditions when it comes to LED lighting for their facilities. In this context, it is important that operators invest in appropriate lighting solutions with reliable, durable and energy-efficient luminaires that can withstand a wide range of requirements:
Temperature-resistant EX-protected luminaires for EX areas. In the water industry, digestion towers or pipes carrying foul gas as well as waste water and clear sludge are potential sources or locations of danger. Explosion-protected luminaires from NORKA are certified and designed in accordance with ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) and IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission Explosive) for explosion protection zones 1, 2, 21 and 22.
High and permanent watertightness of the lights against the ingress of water and dust. IP-certified luminaires from NORKA generally have at least IP protection classes IP65, IP66 (dust-tight and protected against water jets) to IP67, IP68 (dust-tight and waterproof). IP69K tightness is also available for areas in which waterproof LED luminaires are cleaned with high-pressure or vapour water jets.
Corrosion-resistant materials, adapted to environments with chemical influences. Aggressive atmospheres require luminaire housings that are resistant to fermentation gases in order to ensure a fail-safe and low-maintenance lighting system. Corrosion-resistant luminaires from NORKA provide reliable light, especially when exposed to ammonia vapours, hydrogen sulphide or fermentation gases.
Robust materials to withstand impacts and ensure a particularly long service life. High demands are placed on break resistance, especially in the food industry, in accordance with the standards of the HACCP concept of the IFS. The IK protection classes (impact-resistant, break-proof, shatter-proof) for NORKA lights range from class IK04 (low protection) to IK10 (high protection).
Sometimes ‘just’ waterproof lighting is not enough to protect against damage. For these particularly tough cases, we offer an additional encapsulation that protects the components even better against high humidity, dirt, dust or chemicals. Encapsulated luminaires are particularly durable and are used in extreme applications such as drinking water tanks. Our chlorine- and ammonia-resistant LUGANO luminaire comes with the high-quality encapsulation as standard, while the connecting cable can be encapsulated as an option for our BERN LED and ZUG LED tubular luminaires. Production, from encapsulation to final assembly, takes place in our own production facilities.

A modern climate chamber ensures the right conditions for encapsulation.
Based on these diverse requirements, NORKA, an expert in the field of industrial lighting for harsh environments, offers future-orientated, economical and sustainable lighting solutions for wastewater treatment plants and water treatment plants with regard to ATEX/IECEx, humidity, corrosion, UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.

| Applications | Areas of application | NORKA luminaire types |
|---|---|---|
| Water extraction and treatment | Lighting of water extraction, filter systems and pump stations | BERN LED ERFURT LED |
| Water storage tanks | Lighting of water tanks | BERN LED LUGANO ZUG LED |
| Sludge treatment (EX zones 2, 22 and 1, 21) | Lighting of sedimentation tanks, sludge treatment, digester gas tower areas | BASEL LED BERN LED EX LAUSANNE WEIMAR |
| Mechanical cleaning stages | Lighting of screening plant, sand and primary clarifier | ERFURT LED ZUG LED |
| Biological and chemical cleaning stages | Lighting of aeration tanks, final clarifier and filtration plant | COESFELD LUGANO LUZERN 38 LED |

In drinking water storage tanks, the combination of high humidity and low ambient temperature is a challenge.
We rely on state-of-the-art lighting technology to ensure effective maintenance and continuous monitoring as well as the safe operation of municipal wastewater treatment plants.
Continuous and maintainable lighting systems with maximum reliability lead to a long-term reduction in maintenance and operating costs, as well as saving valuable resources and reducing CO2 emissions.
